Community Partnership Launches Major Child Care Expansion in Fergus Falls
A broad community partnership is coming together to address one of the region’s most pressing challenges: access to affordable, high-quality child care. Through a unique collaboration led by PioneerCare and Fergus Falls Area Habitat for Humanity, the project will add up to 70 new child care slots in Fergus Falls over the next three years.
The project will be built on vacant land owned by PioneerCare off Channing Avenue, behind the former Daily Journal building (now N.F. Field and CJB Law). The plan includes construction of a series of small, neighborhood-style “child care pods,” designed for independent, licensed providers. Fergus Falls Area Habitat for Humanity will lead construction of Phase One, which is anticipated to start in Spring of 2026. Both organizations share the intention to continue partnering on future phases, with timing and scope to be aligned as the project progresses. In addition to this project, the Fergus Falls Area Habitat for Humanity will continue with their primary mission of building homes in our local communities. PioneerCare will serve as project owner and catalyst of the child care expansion project, ensuring the long-term community benefit of this shared effort.
“This is exactly the kind of project Habitat for Humanity loves to be part of one that strengthens families, supports our workforce, and builds community,” said Stan Carignan, Executive Director of Fergus Falls Area Habitat for Humanity. “Together, we’re not just building structures; we’re creating opportunities for children to learn, parents to work, and families to thrive.”
The initiative is guided by the Rural Child Care Innovation Program (RCCIP), which has worked closely with local leaders to design sustainable solutions tailored to community needs. “Fergus Falls has shown what’s possible when a community comes together,” said Katie Ganoe, RCCIP Child Care Project Manager. “The collaboration between non-profits, businesses, and local leaders has been incredible and it’s going to make a real, lasting difference for families.”
Nathan Johnson, CEO of PioneerCare, emphasized that the project represents the best of local collaboration. “This project isn’t about one organization it’s about what we can accomplish together as a community to get something good done,” Johnson said. “Drawing on our experience operating PioneerKids, PioneerCare is uniquely positioned as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to help catalyze a project like this one that brings broad community benefit by supporting families, employers, and the next generation all at once.”
The community capital campaign, hosted by the PioneerCare Foundation, has already raised $1.15 million toward its $1.4 million goal through the generosity of local businesses, foundations, charitable trusts, and other community partners.
“Access to child care directly affects our local economy and the ability of parents to participate in the workforce,” said a joint statement from several business leaders involved in the campaign. “Supporting this project is an investment in the future of our community.”
With strong momentum behind the campaign, organizers are now inviting community members, businesses, service clubs, and local donors to join in completing the final stretch of fundraising. Contributions will help bring the project’s vision to life and ensure families have more access to quality, affordable child care.
The first phase of construction is anticipated to begin in 2026, with additional phases to follow through 2028.
